I swear I get asked multiple times a week for tips and recommendations on living this crazy (fun!) traveling lifestyle. With more and more people able to work remotely, it is easier than ever to enjoy traveling and seeing all the different cities on your bucket list. While it definitely isn’t for everyone, I highly recommend giving it a try if you are tempted. Even if you only plan on doing it for a few months or even a year. It keeps life interesting and you are always somewhere new, exploring and seeing parts of the country (or world) that you wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to see.
One thing that I love about the ability to stay in different cities for a month at a time, is that you really are able to get a feel for these places. Rather than a fly in and out weekend trip, you become more familiar with the pace of the city and the people who call it home. It’s a really unique opportunity so if you have the ability to give it a shot, I put together a few tips for you to consider, based on our 2.5+ years of doing this.
- Don’t put everything you own into storage. Sell what you can and donate the rest! It might be tempting to hang onto every single thing you own, and while that might be best if you only plan on traveling for a month or two, I encourage you to do a big clear out so you aren’t paying to store things needlessly.
- Pack lightly! You can re-wear staples in your closet and you can pack a few essentials for every season. You don’t want to take more than that! (trust me…) This is probably the hardest part about moving, you accumulate so much in the course of a month! Believe me, the better you can be about this, the happier you will be when it comes time to pack up for your next destination!
- When looking for places to live in each city, make sure to do your research and find places that are centrally located to the things that are important to you. For us, being close to a gym, grocery store, coffee shop, restaurants, and walking distance to all essentials are our top requirements.
- Trust your gut – 9 times out of 10 it’s probably going to be right! If a neighborhood gives you weird vibes when researching online, trust that! No matter how affordable the accommodation is, or how cute it might look in the photos.
- Create a budget (and stick to it!). This is a critical one to living this traveling lifestyle. It is SO easy to feel like you are on vacation and be tempted to splurge, so have a strict budget for things like housing, gym, eating out, etc. so you aren’t wasting money unnecessarily.
One bonus tip – create a schedule and a daily routine that you keep from city to city. It has really helped me feel settled in each place we visit, and means I stay productive despite having to set up a new home every 4-5 weeks 😉
Feel free to ask me any questions in the comments section of this blog post and I’ll get right back to you! Safe travels!!!
