Over the years, I have heard from a number of clients and friends that putting a wellness routine into place is much harder than they anticipated, and I totally get it. Creating habits is always a process, but I have a few tips to help make that process easier, as well as some ideas for what your wellness routine might look like. Feel free to get creative, as it looks different for everyone and every body, but really dive into what fills you up, these are just a few ideas!
Drink more water. This sounds like an easy one, but it is often the one that falls off our plate first when we are busy. So if you find that to be true for you, try a water tracking app, mark off your glasses on your Torey’s Treasures notepad, or get an oversized insulated tumbler that means you only have to fill it twice to hit your daily water goals. This makes it easy to know if you are hitting your recommended water intake for the day, which should be somewhere around 1/2 your body weight in ounces.
Make whole foods a priority. If there is one thing that I do that makes a big difference in how I feel, it’s making sure I am eating whole foods. Anytime I notice my energy slipping, or I start to feel sluggish it is usually because I haven’t been getting my whole foods in every day. Luckily there are a few easy ways to get this back on your priority list. You can bake up a big tray of veggies to add to meals throughout the week, order a side salad with your dinner out, or even pick up a prepared veggie tray at the grocery store to make healthy snacks as easy as grab and go!
Make sure you are moving your body. This doesn’t have to be hardcore, focused workouts. Just try to make sure you are moving around more, rather than sitting. After a busy work day it can be easy to fall victim to the couch, especially when your favorite series is back on Netflix! One tip I try to live by is to push that back into the evening some. So rather than sitting on the couch from 5pm until bedtime, I find a few things to do around the apartment, go for walk (or a cycle!) through a new neighborhood, or find a fun creative project to tackle first. Then when 8pm comes around, I can feel better about crashing on the couch for an episode of my favorite show. Plus, you knock more things off your to do list this way so it’s a win-win!
Carve out time for yourself. Do you find that reading relaxes you and resets your mind before bed? Do that! Do you feel stress leave your body on a short 20 minute walk? Do that! Finding a few small things that help clear your mind, and reset your stress levels can be easier than you think.
Prioritize social time. This is a tricky one (particularly if you move to a new city every month!), and one that is often overlooked when we talk about our overall well being, but I truly believe this is critical to our overall happiness levels. We are hardwired to need connection, but in the busyness of life it is easy for this one to drop off our priority list. If you are feeling overwhelmed or disconnected, I suggest reaching out to a friend or family member outside of your daily circle. Meet for a cup of coffee or strike up a conversation with someone after your yoga class. This is an important way you can show up for yourself and I have found it very rewarding to incorporate this into my wellness routine.
Sometimes I find the hardest part is just actually doing the things that I know will make me feel good. So if you feel stuck in a rut and don’t have the mental capacity or energy to do all the things, try picking just one. Start small and the little things will add up to the big picture 🙂 Try to add another glass of water to your day, or roast up a tray of veggies to add to your dinner tonight. I often find that one step leads to another and before you know it you will be back on your wellness path and feeling like a million bucks!
