Now that I’m away from NYC and looking at photos from spending two months during the middle of winter, I honestly kind of miss it! There’s truly something nostalgic about New York City, any time of the year. This time around we got to experience Christmas in NYC (which was so magical), a little snow, and truly explored every single neighborhood of the city! As you know, I spent last Fall and last Spring living in New York City, so spending winter there was a whole other beast, but SO FUN. I’m sharing my outfits I wore to keep warm (bundling up in layers is key), and a few things we did over the cold, harsh, chilly winter months in the city. Keep reading to hear more!
WHAT TO DO IN THE WINTER IN NYC:
As you can imagine, it gets pretty frigid in the winter in New York City, so finding activities that were conducive to the weather proved to be a bit of a challenge, but honestly, there is SO MUCH TO DO in NYC at all times, that we were very happy regardless of doing something or not! Before you continue reading, be sure to check out my must see and do activities in NYC during Christmas and what we tackled in the month of December! We really packed it in that month to try and experience the holiday season and all its’ magic, and actually didn’t mind one bit once January hit. This is what we did in the month of January in NYC:
- lots of coffee shop hangs (google any coffee shop near you, there’s a ton)
- go on lots of walks (around Central Park, across Brooklyn Bridge, and around west village, our favorite NYC neighborhood)
- adventure across the river in Brooklyn (Williamsburg is our favorite)
- ate lots of pizza slices and tasted the best around the city (see below for our favorites)
- took an underground subway tour
- there are tons of museums in NYC to visit too for a chilly day
WHERE WE ATE:
- Bubby’s: brunch and BEST pancakes I’ve ever tasted
- Daily Provisions: cute coffee shop with delicious crullers (like a donut, get the maple)
- Suited: my favorite vegan banana coconut bread in FiDi + coffee shop
- Denino’s: the *best* Italian food you’ll eat in NYC! make sure to order the arancini to start and a delicious NYC style pizza, you won’t regret it
- Lure: incredible ambiance and atmosphere in Soho neighborhood
- Hudson Yards Grill: if you’re over in this area definitely check it out
- Sen Sakana: kosher peruvian Japanese food (all gluten free too!)
- Osteria Cotta: cutest little intimate, Italian spot on the upper west side
- Jane: casual American style bistro with excellent service
- Grand Boucherie: very grand and elegant architectural building with French style cuisine
- Tacombi: my #1 favorite burrito in the city, and don’t forget to order the spicy marg and esquites
- Flame: hibachi style restaurant that’s amazing!
- Levain Bakery: you can’t forget to go here when in the city- THE BEST COOKIES you’ll ever try in your entire life (you’ll thank me later- try the chocolate with peanut butter chips)!
- TOP NYC SLICES OF PIZZA: Scarrs, Upside, L’Industrie, Di Fara, Best Pizza, Village Square, Bleecker Street Pizza, Zazzy’s, Joe’s
GIRLY THINGS IN THE CITY:
Since we were in the city for an extended period this time, I had to take care of some “girly things”, and highly recommend checking out these if you’re in the market for some maintenance 😉
- Peachy- incredibly knowledgable and the best botox experience I’ve had to date
- Glosslab- the best manis/pedis and it’s a subscription service
- TMPL- the gym we joined for a couple months and LOVED it! they have a few locations around the city but we preferred the west village location
NYC TIPS:
In my other blog posts during the Spring and Fall I recommended taking the subway and that still rings true today! We actually purchased an unlimited monthly metro card and DEFINITELY got our money’s worth! Each subway ride costs about $2.75 so they add up quickly, considering we took the train everyday to the gym. Totally recommend utilizing the subway though, it’s the quickest and best mode of transportation in the city. Plus it’s the best people watching if you want to get the “true” NYC feel, if you know what I mean!
Let me know if you have any questions about living, staying, or visiting New York City! Now that I’ve lived there pretty much every season of the year I feel like I have a pretty good handle on neighborhoods, months to visit, etc, so definitely let me know (you can always comment below or email me torey@toreystreasures.com). Hope you visit and love it as much as I do! 🙂
