If you’ve been following along on my latest adventure- a month in Miami Beach, then you’ll know I’ve been working from here and exploring while I can! Last weekend my boyfriend and I ventured down to the keys for the day and had a blast. I wanted to cover where we went, what we did, and how we made a day trip to the Florida Keys from Miami!
HOW TO SEE THE FLORIDA KEYS FROM MIAMI IN A DAY:
I’m just going to walk you through our entire day and let you in on some great spots, some advice we wish we had known before we traveled to the Florida Keys, and where you should definitely go while there!
- We rented a Turo (an app for cars that’s like airbnb)… so we selected a convertible which was super fun to drive down south on the open highway with the wind blowing in our faces! Totally recommend.
- Pack a bag for the day full of: swimsuits, snorkel/mask, change of clothes, hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, waters, protein bars, and towels
- Our initial plan was to drive south to Marathon (where there’s supposed to be great beach snorkeling), but due to LDW traffic, we didn’t make it that far. If you can keep driving until you make it to the 7-mile highway that is a one way freeway bridge totally over the ocean, do it! Looks gorgeous.
- In Islamorada, we stopped at Cheeca Lodge and Moorings Village (where the show Bloodline was filmed). Great views, cool spot, gorgeous look out, nice restaurants, etc.
- Lunch was at Bad Boys Burrito which was absolutely fantastic! 10/10 for the fish burrito with verde sauce OH MY GOSH.
- We also stopped at Robbie’s where we initially planned to kayak out to Indian Key (a private island with great snorkeling) but with thunderstorms they cancelled all of this. It’s just a 30 min kayak each way, with supposedly great water + sealife out there.
- Lesson learned: some of the best snorkeling in the Florida Keys is on an excursion! Sun Diver came highly recommended but again, due to weather it was cancelled.
- We decided to rent a Hobie cat (my boyfriend is certified in sailing) at Playa Largo resort which is north in Key Largo. Such a cute resort by the way if you’re looking for somewhere to stay that’s updated + nice! We did a 2 hour Hobie cat rental which was SO MUCH FUN + gorgeous (my sailing outfit can be shopped here)! The waters turned out to be majestic, stunning, and all around amazing way to end the day.
- Our plan was to stop at the highly recommended Alabama Jack’s on the way home in Key Largo but be sure to check their hours! It’s a lively waterside spot for seafood, known for their conch fritters, live music, and breezy atmosphere. Instead- we ended up stopping for a drink, dinner, and famous key lime pie at Blackwater Siren in Key Largo! It was the yummiest dinner and dessert with such a cute waterfront spot! Plus, the sunset view from the patio there is AMAZING. Oh, and you can’t beat a $25 bill for two which included drinks, dinner, and dessert! Score!
As you can see, our day didn’t go as planned due to weather restraints and holiday weekend traffic, BUT, all in all, we had THE BEST DAY! We loved every second of our adventurous day and now have an idea what it’s like to venture down into the Florida Keys! I hope you can learn from our day trip, and make the most of your trip down to the Florida Keys from Miami! It can easily be done in a day like we did, or turn it into a weekend adventure. If you can make the 4-5 hour drive down to Key West, go for it- I’ve been in the past with my mom + it was so so cool!
XO,
Torey
