TGIF! I’ve been spending a lot of time lately cleaning out my closet, purging, and donating items that no longer serve me! I like to consider myself pretty “ruthless” so to speak when it comes to my closet clean outs. I typically don’t feel a connection to any certain item, which I think has to do with the nature of my job. Getting so many clothes in forces me to constantly clean out my closet and get rid of so many things at the same time. I like to think of myself by now as a “pro” at keeping my closet somewhat clean and holding onto only what I love, need, and wear repeatedly. I’m going to share a few of my trips to my closet clean outs today on the blog…
My biggest tip is to start out by giving yourself a few hours one day to knock this out! I try and do this every month, but realistically, someone who isn’t a fashion blogger, probably needs to opt for a closet clean out once a quarter (once every 3 months-ish). Start by taking everything out! Yes, it’ll be a huge disaster, but I promise it’ll get better. Divide everything into three categories as you go through each item and put in the proper pile: keep, donate, sell.
I try for the 6 month rule! If I haven’t touched it, worn it, or even thought about it in the past 6 months, and won’t for the next 6 months, it’s time to rid of it. If there’s any question, it’s most likely gotta go into one of the donate or sell piles. I’ve been trying more and more to move towards keeping staple pieces ONLY. I do love a good trendy piece, bright colored clothing, or fun print, but I find that year after year they don’t get as much wear as a staple white tee, nude sweater, or denim. Trendy pieces get outdated quicker so I recommend investing in staple pieces and keeping those around!
I like to use these cute white + gold felt hangers to not only look chic in my closet, but also to save space! I love to have my closet organized my closet by color so it’s easier to find what I need when I want it! Within each color, I’ll start from left to right by item: tank tops all the way to long sleeves and then dresses/rompers/jumpsuits. This way left to right is organized by color AND within each color it’s organized by TYPE.
At the end of putting everything into 3 piles, and placing everything tidily back in my closet, I immediately take care of the piles. The “keep” pile has been taken care of, so I put everything to “donate” into bags, then in the trunk of my car for a drop off, and the “sell” items I take directly to Crossroads or a local consignment shop. These shops typically give me 33% cash for my items which is a pretty fair trade off, and typically I’ll rack in $100-$200+ dollars with my items that were simply just sitting in my closet, not being worn. It’s truly a win win situation!
I hope this was a helpful and inspiring blog post to do a closet clean out this weekend! I especially recommend this when we’re transitioning into a new season, so now is the perfect time 🙂
