A couple weeks ago on Instagram stories I mentioned that I was going in for my routine botox appointment, which typically comes around a few times a year (let’s say 3-ish times) and the response from all of you was OVERWHELMING that you’d like to hear more on the topic! So, here we are! Diving deep into the not-so-talked about botox conversation and answering some of your questions as well as my take on botox.
Before we dive into the 411 of Botox, I wanted to clarify that NO- I’m not a doctor and I’m not here to tell what you should do, but YES- these are my own experiences and my own opinion. With that being said, it’s important that you speak to a doctor or healthcare professional about what is right for YOU and your face/body!
HERE’S MY STORY:
I originally told myself, I would wait until I turned 30 to start getting Botox just because I simply felt like that was the right thing to do. After months of considering, research, and speaking to lots of people, I also had a very important trip with Propel Water in New York City coming up, so I decided since I was going to be in front of the camera, up close and personal, I’d give it a try. I went in for some “baby Botox” around my eyes (crows feet) and my forehead wrinkles. After one week, the Botox kicked in and OMG the results were night and day difference! My face was smoother, makeup went on better, and overall my wrinkles had completely vanished. It was such a game changer that I decided I’d continue to give it a try as needed. Now, here we are 3 years later and still going strong with Botox and I’m not ashamed- actually SO happy with the results! I’m very happy I took that preventative measure a few years back.
YOUR QUESTIONS:
How do I know when I need botox? It’s up to you- definitely consult with a doctor by making an appointment with someone who’s certified! It’s something that is definitely a preventative measure.
How much does Botox cost? It depends on where you go and what state you live in. In CA everything seems way more expensive than anywhere else in the country, but I’ve paid anywhere from $11/unit to $16/unit. It’s definitely an investment in yourself!
When did you start getting Botox and why? I started back in 2017 (see above).
Where do you get it in your face? I started out small with a couple targeted areas, but now get my crows feet, 11’s, forehead, and sometimes my bunny lines. Everyone is different so this is just what works for me and might not work for you!
How many units do you get? I started out small, with about 20, and now get about 32-40 every time. Just depends where my wrinkles are at and what’s needed then we distribute as necessary! Everyone is different though and that’s what works for me.
How long does your Botox last? It depends- when I started out I feel like I went every 6 months, but now that time has gone on, I feel like my Botox metabolizes in my body quicker, and I find myself making an appointment every 3-4 months.
Does it hurt? I have a pretty high pain tolerance, but you can definitely feel a little something. It’s not bad at all and only takes a few minutes. So it’s quick and small little pinches.
Can you get Botox while pregnant/breastfeeding/or for TMJ in the jaw? Again, this is for you to discuss with your doctor at your consultation. I am pretty sure it’s very dangerous while pregnant/breastfeeding though! In terms of getting it in your jaw for TMJ, I’ve never done that spot, but I think it’s supposed to prevent your jaw from clenching/grinding? Again- I’m not a specialist, so speak to a doctor!
Does Botox help decrease sweating? I know you are able to get it in your armpits if you wish and that target area is supposed to decrease sweating. Speak to your doctor about this and what’s right for you.
Where do you go? I have gone to a few places that I’ve liked! I’ve been to my dermatologist (highly recommend), I’ve also been to one inside a home office, and another was actually through a Groupon that I found.
Recovery time? None, really! You might have little red marks for the first couple hours, but you’re good to reapply makeup after. They recommend no sweating/working out/rubbing your face/bending over/etc for the first 24 hours though to prevent the Botox to shift.
Has your face ever “stuck/froze” or have you had any other side effects? Never! You can always tell your doctor that you want a more natural look which is always a safe bet.
And, there you have it, the nitty gritty details of my Botox experience! Have you tried Botox before? I’m vowing to myself (and to you reading this) that in 2020 I’ll be more vulnerable and intentional with blog posts like this, and share more real life on Instagram!
