STEP 1: Before you start, be sure you have a sturdy hair tie around your wrist. Then, pull all hair up, away from face, just like you are going to complete a high ponytail, but do not secure with the hair tie just yet!
STEP 2: Start pulling your hair through the hair tie, just like you would for a high ponytail, however, stop before you pull all the hair through the ponytail. Quickly see next step!
There should be about 1-2 inches of the ends of your hair that has not yet been pulled through the hair tie or through the “high ponytail”.
STEP 3: Now is the time to twist the rubber band in your hand (so it forms a figure 8 with your “high ponytail” and what you are holding in your fingers). This will lock the hair into place on your head.
STEP 4: Now is when things start to get… messy. Pull your hair through the portion of the figure 8 in your hair tie, and transfer your hair tie to your other hand. As you do this, be sure to pull through the 1-2 inches of “tail” from the ponytail at the beginning. I usually pull it around to the front of the bun, and somehow it gets tucked in to the messy bun itself when transferring the hair tie from side to side.
Continue to transfer the hair tie from side to side, spinning the hair tie to create figure 8s, as many times as you can, so you have somewhat of a tight held bun. It usually takes me about 3 times (side to side).
STEP 5: Now is the time to adjust the bun and tighten the hair tie. Pull the sides of the bun out to create more of a “pouf”. I also like to pull out the top of the bun so it sticks up on the top of my head, instead of behind. It should be tight and locked into place by now!

VOILA…You have officially created the perfect messy bun! I love wearing messy buns because 1- they’re so easy, 2- they mean business, and 3- the hair stays out of your face. I’m not going to lie, but I did feel a bit silly creating this post, however it was highly requested, so I just had to share my messy bun tips with you! I hope you have a great weekend 🙂
